From the Pastor - February 2015

Greetings Beloved of Christ!

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.”  1 John 4:7

February is often referred to as the love month because of Saint Valentine’s Day on the 14th.  For us, as the lovers of Jesus, it serves as a great reminder that “since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” (1 John 4:11).

I want to share with you about two exciting aspects of the love of God that are being offered here at Elmwood this month.  First is the preaching series that I am doing each Sunday morning of February.  Last fall a number of Elmwood folk went to see the special screening of the Christian movie, “When God Left the Building”.  The producers of the film, Thom and Joani Schultz have written the book Why Nobody Wants to Go to Church Anymore: And How 4 Acts of Love Will Make Your Church Irresistible to help the troubled church of America deal with this critical situation.  The Schultzes believe that Radical Hospitality, Fearless Conversation, Genuine Humility, and Divine Anticipation will make the church irresistible because this is how Jesus lived.  So together, week by week throughout the month of February, we will explore these four aspects of God’s love and welcome the Holy Spirit to have His way in us.

The second opportunity for a fresh encounter with the love of God is our 2015 Lenten Series, the video series The Grave Robber:  How Jesus Can Make Your Impossible Possible, based on the best seller book by Pastor Mark Batterson.  Each week we will journey with Mark as he reveals the incredible power of the seven miraculous signs of Jesus that are recorded in the Gospel of John.  Mark will also share true stories of modern-day miracles that bring to light the miracles of our own lives that point us to the One who healed the sick, calmed the storm, and even raised the dead.  Please join us each Wednesday evening for a simple supper and our Lenten worship service (see details on page 3).

Please continue to be in prayer for the family and friends of Elmwood.  Many have been hit by the flu virus this year and others are dealing with major life situations.  Finally, please remember our expectant mothers and the precious babies they are carrying.

In His Amazing Love,

Pastor Fred
