Dear Elmwood Family,
Jesus said, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”
Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet and Omega is the final letter. Jesus is saying the same as, “I am the A and the Z”. From start to finish it is all about Him. As individuals, and as a congregation, we exist for Him. We were created to bring glory and honor to Him. As Mary, the sister of Lazarus demonstrated, Jesus is “the one thing” that we are called to give our lives to. As the Christian song declares, “It’s all about You Jesus, all about You.” So often we forget this and slide Jesus down our priority list to be one of the top ten things of our lives. But God wants to be first, the Alpha, of our lives and also be the Omega, the last thing. From start to finish, as disciples of Christ, we are to always put Him at the top of the list. The first commandment declares, “You shall have no other gods.” Martin Luther explains this with the simple statement, “We are to fear, love, and trust God above anything else.” Thankfully the Father in His great love for us sent His Son, the Lord Jesus, to be our Savior. The Father knew, because of our sinful hearts, that we would never be able to keep this command by our own strength or will. How wonderful it is to have the gracious gift of the Holy Spirit’s power which empowers us to live life as God originally intended for us to live. As the Apostle Paul wrote, “What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith.” (Philippians 3: 8-9).
September is the Alpha month of the new school year. Once again so much begins. Kids go back to school; fall activities and studies began again here at Elmwood. As all these things start up again let’s seek to keep Christ, first and foremost, the Alpha and the Omega, of our busy lives.
It is thrilling that one of the new opportunities that we are offering this fall at Elmwood is the Alpha course. Alpha is a twelve week course designed to explore the truth of Jesus in a safe and fun environment. See the details on page 2 in this newsletter. Please sign up as soon as possible with Kai or call the church office. Please pray for Alpha as it begins at Elmwood.
May this fall
season be for each of us a returning to our first love for Christ
In His Love and Joy,Pastor Fred
